On August 2, 2011, Rapid City police officers Ryan McCandless, Nick Armstrong, and Tim Doyle were shot during a routine traffic stop at the intersection of Anamosa and Greenbriar Streets by 22-year-old Daniel Tiger. McCandless and Armstrong were killed from their injuries at the scene, while Doyle survived despite being critically wounded. Tiger was shot and killed after returning fire, ending the violent encounter.
