Rocky terrain covered in fallen autumn leaves beside a forest stream.

Serenity Dennard disappeared on February 3, 2019, when she was 9 years old. She had walked away from the Black Hills Children's Home near Rockerville, South Dakota, in freezing temperatures. Despite one of the largest search efforts in state history involving hundreds of volunteers, search dogs, aircraft, and more than 60 agencies, no trace of her was ever found. Cadaver dogs picked up a possible scent in this creek, but nothing conclusive was recovered, and over 275 leads were investigated without results. In 2021, the formal search was suspended, though the case remains open, and investigators still consider her an endangered missing child. Regulators later found that the children's home failed to follow important safety protocols, including delaying their call to 911 after she went missing.
